Description
“La Leocadia” (also known as Una manola or Leocadia Zorrilla) by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya.
Painting Details:
Artist: Francisco Goya (1746–1828).
Date: Painted between 1819 and 1823.
Originally a mural painted in oil directly onto the plaster walls of Goya’s house, the “Quinta del Sordo” (House of the Deaf Man), outside Madrid.
Series: It is one of the 14 deeply personal and haunting works known collectively as the “Black Paintings” (Pinturas negras).
Subject: The woman depicted is likely Leocadia Weiss (née Zorrilla), Goya’s much younger maid and companion during his final years. She is portrayed standing by a funerary mound, wearing what appears to be a maja (traditional Spanish) mourning dress.
The original mural was transferred to canvas in the late 19th century and is now held in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
