Description
The tapestry “Summer: The Gardener Children” is a masterpiece executed on the model of the famous painter Charles Le Brun (1619–1690), who was the first director of the manufactory, from 1622 to 1688, and brought it to its greatest grandeur
It belongs to a series entitled “The Seasons”, and was executed between 1703 and 1704.
It is the only tapestry of the series that is preserved in Paris; the other three are in Florence.
The tapestry refers to Summer: in a large, magical garden, two children are watering flowers, while a third hides in a flowering bush. In the background, two other children bathe in a tub.
As you can see, from an aesthetic and artistic point of view, the tapestry does not differ much from a painting: the colors are bright and vivid, the nuances perfect, the composition soft and impeccable.
These works were made using only threads of different colors.
